Crystal Ski have learnt that the Austrian Gastein ski area is improving off-piste options through a new ski route and avalanche resources.

Crystal Ski, who offer ski holidays to Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein, explain that the Gastein Valley is home to four ski resorts; Sportgastein, Angertal, Bad Gastein, and Bad Hofgastein. The Gastein ski area includes some 50 cable cars and ski lifts, and 220km pisted slopes. In addition to this, Gastein will now offer greater opportunities to off-piste skiers and boarders.

Firstly, a new ski route offering an off-piste experience will take skiers from the top of the Kasereben chairlift (situated between Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein) and will run down to the small resort of Angertal. Named “Katstall”, the ski route will offer advanced skiers and boarders deep, powdery conditions as the run is not groomed. There are no snowmaking facilities either so snow builds naturally to offer enthusiasts an off-piste experience in the middle of a ski area.

Secondly, Sportgastein is being developed in to a “freeride centre” through a joint project between the Gastein lift company and the specialists of Programat. The Freeride Info Base, situated close to Sportgastein’s ski lifts, provides skiers and boarders with up to date information, piste map with ski routes marked, current avalanche reports, and electronic equipment used to check that your avalanche locator device is working correctly and switched on.

Wolfgang Egger, head of the Gastein lift company: “Sportgastein, which spans almost 2700 vertical meters, offers perfect off-piste opportunities set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Hohe Tauern mountains. The very latest information and safety alerts for our 3 ski routes are intended to guarantee our guests the maximum freeride enjoyment possible. It is for this reason that we decided to establish the Freeride Info Base in Sportgastein.”

Finally, at the high altitude ski centre of Sportgastein a new avalanche search and rescue practice area is planned. This includes a space for skiers and boarders to practice hunting for buried locator transponders, training for worst-case-scenarios.

Crystal Ski offer ski holidays to both Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein in Austria, as well as other top European ski resorts. Ski holidays to Whistler and other top ski resorts throughout the US and Canada are also available. A range of ski deals for the 2012/13 season are now available via the Crystal Ski website. Great value ‘ski plus’ packages including flights, transfers, accommodation, ski/board hire or carriage and lift pass in one great value package are available to selected European resorts.
