Apopka, FL (PRWEB) July 31, 2012
Aquatic Eco-Systems and Green Sky Growers were proud to play host to two tour stops during University of Florida’s Florida Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Conference. On July 27, 2012, a group of approximately 50 people toured Green Sky Growers, a sustainable rooftop farm located in Winter Garden, FL. They also made a stop to tour the “backyard” aquaponics system located behind Aquatic Eco-Systems in Apopka, FL.
Green Sky Growers is a state-of-the-art, sustainable rooftop farm located in the historic district of Winter Garden, FL. The facility produces fresh vegetables and fish year-round, without the use of pesticides. Overall, aquaponics uses 95% less water than traditional farming. Sustainable growing practices are of prime importance at Green Sky Growers, including the harvesting of rainwater. All of the growing systems at Green Sky Growers recycle 100% of the nutrients and water used to grow. The various growing techniques used in this facility include floating raft and vertical production systems as well as aquaponics. Though this is mainly used as a research and development facility, much of the food produced at Green Sky is available each week at the Winter Garden Farmers’ Market, as well as through local food co-ops.
