California Advances "Alternatives Assessment" Tools to Boost Innovation and De-Risk Consumer Products

The Innovating for Safer Greener Products Forum, to be held at the San Jose Hilton on September 5th, will profile global brand leaders and niche pioneers such as Seventh Generation, Johnson & Johnson, GE and McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, who have led the way in developing the new “Alternatives Assessment” protocol now encoded into law by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. The Forum will take place preceding the Safer Consumer Products Summit (September 6-7) and will be keynoted by Green Chemistry pioneer John Warner.

“Alternatives Assessment” is a game-changing method for de-risking formulations and materials for consumer goods that ranks and summarizes a myriad of factors (such as toxicology, exposure and environmental footprint) when seeking to find substitutes to potentially hazardous or banned ingredients. Versions of it have been developed by progressive corporations, environmental non-profits and government agencies.

Now, after two years of consultation with trade groups and activists, the State of California is unifying different approaches into the cornerstone of the new “Green Chemistry” and “Safer Products” regulations that were first signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger. The rule-making process is now in its administrative phase, with a final public comment period that will last through September 11, 2012. Experts predict only minor changes (“Safer Consumer Product Alternatives,” CA-DTSC Reference Number R-2011-02).
