Miami, Florida (PRWEB) July 29, 2012
A new meta-analysis reviewing Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), published in Medline and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, resulting in the selection of ten qualified RCTs, for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients and consisting of 183 RA patients and 187 placebo-treated states that Omega-3 intake reduced nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug consumption, reduced tender joint count, swollen joint count and morning stiffness. The report attributes its finding, in part, to omega-3 dosages of more than 2.7 gram per day for more than 3 months.
Agreeing with this finding, Nutri-Med Logic Corp adds that Omega-3 is a nutrient and nutrients are more associated with dietary intervention, not medicinal treatment.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are medicine. Dietary interventions are mostly considered as a mean to “potentially” combat the cause, whereas medicine is mostly considered for treatment of the symptoms.
The distinction arises from the fact that the “symptoms” are easily noted, diagnosed and treated, whereas the “cause” is always ambiguous and, in most disease-states, it continues.
RA, like other degenerative diseases, is a multi-factor disease. The strongest suspect in RA has always been a dysregulated inflammation. While Inflammation is the switch that turns on the immune responses, but if it does not turn off (become dysregulated) then the immune system will the harm the body much more than it would help; as the case in RA.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (COX-2 Inhibitors), such as Aspirin, attempt to “temporarily” resolve inflammation and thus “temporarily” relieve the symptoms of RA (reducing the stiffness, pain and swelling).
According to Harvard Medical school, Aspirin receives its most beneficial properties through the triggering of molecules that are derived from Omega-3 (17R-D series Resolvins, RvD & DT). (1).
Resolvins resolve inflammation through stopping the migration of the immune inflammatory cells.
Omega-3 “inherently” is a natural anti-inflammatory and it improves the dysregulated inflammation, with or without Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Aspirin.
Additionally, and again, according to University of Harvard, Omega-3 not only is the precursor to Resolvins but that also Omega-3 (DHA) plays a fundamental role in MARESINS (macrophage-derived mediators of inflammation) and the resolution of inflammation. (2)
Macrophages are potent immune cells, which are implicated in the onset and the progression of degenerative diseases, such as RA.
In conclusion, Nutri-Med Logic Corp agreeing with this report, most notably with the duration and the intake of Omega-3, adds that while this report expands the health benefits of Omega-3 in RA patients but consumption of Omega-3 "as a dietary intervention" should not be mistaken as the application of Omega-3 for prevention or the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Omega-3 is a nutrient.
