As a leading host of all types of Internet content, GalaxyVisions has seen first-hand the importance of a free and open Internet. If that changes, so does the level of communication and innovation that's been the foundation of the Internet's success.
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 30, 2012
GalaxyVisions, the New York metropolitan area's most customer-focused provider of Internet hosting and managed dedicated services, announced today its support of efforts to keep the Internet open, affordable and free of censorship.
The movement to prevent censorship and the lock-down of the Internet has grown dramatically in recent months as Congress considered various cyber security bills like CISPA, repressive trade agreements and the powerful interests of the entertainment industry.
"As a leading host of all types of Internet content, GalaxyVisions has seen first-hand the importance of a free and open Internet. If that changes, so does the level of communication, collaboration and innovation that's been the foundation of the Internet's success," said Ray Sidler, president and co-founder of GalaxyVisions and its sister company, ColoGuard. "We cannot let special interests take over the Internet and turn it into a closed medium like television."
The Declaration of Internet Freedom, which GalaxyVisions supports and signed, calls on the government and private interests to stop interfering with the Internet. The document calls for five basic principles:
- Expression: Everyone must be free to use the Internet without censorship.
- Access: People must be able to connect at a reasonably high speed and an affordable cost
- Openness: Everyone must be able to write, read, listen, watch and learn from what's available on the Internet.
- Innovation: People must be able to create and innovate without seeking permission. New technologies must not be blocked.
- Privacy: Users must be in control of how their private data may be used.
"We believe that a free and open Internet can bring about a better world. To keep the Internet free and open, we call on communities, industries and countries to recognize these principles. We believe that they will help to bring about more creativity, more innovation and more open societies," the document's preamble reads. The full text of the declaration can be found here: http://www.internetdeclaration.org/freedom.
In the first two days after the document was posted, more than 35,000 individuals and organizations signed on in support. Today, the growing list includes members of Congress, advocacy organizations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, hundreds of Internet companies and thousands of individuals, including Internet pioneer Vint Cerf.
GalaxyVisions, which was founded in 2003 on the principle of affordable access and excellent service, hosts the servers and services of thousands of companies and individuals. "Every day, we see first-hand the value of a free and open Internet to people, business and society at large," Sidler said.
