Exinda, a global provider of next-generation WAN optimization and performance assurance solutions, has been deployed at Peterborough Regional College to successfully manage and prioritise bandwidth usage across the campus and to ensure that critical applications, including Citrix and online examinations platforms, run smoothly.
The challenge for the College was to manage its bandwidth to ensure that heavy Internet usage from students did not negatively impact on critical applications including email, website, and Citrix farm - a common challenge for modern educational establishments. Describing the challenge Peter Griffiths, Network Manager at the College said, “It’s important that our network is managed responsively and that usage is prioritised. Students can easily use up the majority of the bandwidth, especially on applications like YouTube. However, YouTube is used for educational purposes at the College and it’s unfeasible to analyse what people are looking at, so we can’t simply restrict access to it.
“The Exinda 6060 features edge caching, so YouTube clips are cached and served to individual users, avoiding the need for them to download the clip individually. This alone has resulted in a 15% decrease in traffic during the day.
“The Exinda system worked really well from the off. We are impressed by its easy-to-use web-based management, its additional features and the level of reporting the system delivers. We have also been very impressed with the level of support we get from Exinda, with queries responded to in hours.”
Adam Davison, VP EMEA at Exinda, adds, “Peterborough College’s challenge is a common one in a world where education is increasingly online and where the pressure on bandwidth continues to rise. It isn’t feasible to restrict access to applications like YouTube when it is used equally as a teaching aid. Thanks to the visibility and level of control delivered by Exinda solutions, the College is able to ensure that usage across the network is prioritised and critical applications are protected, while incidental usage by students can continue to a healthy degree.”
Peter Griffiths concludes, “Exinda’s solution was easily the most powerful and user-friendly of all of the solutions we considered. We will be upgrading our Internet connection in the summer and the Exinda solution is more than capable of managing our needs for the foreseeable future.”
Graded as ‘outstanding’ in Ofsted’s January 2012 Report, Peterborough Regional College invested over £500,000 in 2011 on updating and creating new facilities to give students the best possible learning environment.
