Unique, on-site vision program enhances the scope of care for traumatic brain injury patients with vision impairments.

Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital has added Neuro-Optometrist Dr. John Metzger to their Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program. Dr. Metzger is providing specialized optometry and vision therapy to patients who have encountered vision loss or impairment after suffering a brain injury.

Megan Hall, Director of Therapy Services at Meadowbrook, noticed that some of their Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) patients had vision difficulties that needed special attention.

“We were finding that people were having difficulties with their walking, gate patterns, feeding themselves or even holding their heads up. We knew that there was something visual but we didn't have anyone who could assess it,” says Hall. “ We were trying to come up with all kinds of things to do to make it better but we didn't have the tools to do that. We thought that if we could form this partnership with Dr. Metzger, who has the neuro-optometry expertise, he could help us meet our patients needs.”

Dr. Metzger is able to offer neuro-optometry and vision therapy to patients at Meadowbrook under the Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver. Once a month he evaluates, prescribes glasses and teaches vision exercises to patients who, without the TBI waiver, may not have been able to afford this specialized area of vision care.

“When you start to see the need, you just go where the need is,“ says Dr. Metzger. “The nice thing about going to Meadowbrook is that the patients are there long term so its the ideal place to help them. They can be there for six months to a year, so I get to follow up with them on a regular basis and do some real quality work.”

Kevin Anderson never had vision problems before he suffered a brain injury last summer. Like many people with brain injuries, his sight became impaired and he was left with severe double vision. Anderson has spent the last six months rehabilitating at Meadowbrook and working with Dr. Metzger.

“He's a great doctor, I like the way he works," Anderson says. “Having somebody be able to come in, understand you and get you set back up to see again, I'd recommend that for anybody who had a TBI. It was great.”

Kristi Dickerson, an occupational therapist at Meadowbrook looks forward to a long, working relationship with Dr. Metzger. “It's awesome to have someone who understands visual perceptual problems. Dr. Metzger gets it," says Dickerson. "He takes his time with each patient and works diligently. He is a great asset to us.”

Dr. Metzger has a private practice, Kansas City Vision Performance Center, in Overland Park, Kansas. It is the only optometry practice in Kansas and Missouri dedicated solely to the full spectrum of visual performance, including vision therapy, developmental optometry, low vision rehabilitation and neuro-optometry. Dr. Metzger and his team of therapists provide an advanced level of vision care to patients of all ages through individualized diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative services.
