Helps developers create voice-controlled applications optimized for mobile platform.

Ikanos Consulting today announced its latest software for the innovative Golden-i® wearable headset computer. Available now as a free download, Gi-OS™ Version 1.0 is a new operating system that has been designed specifically for the Golden-i headset. Gi-OS makes it easy for developers to include voice control in their applications and to take full advantage of Golden-i’s innovative features.

Conceived by Kopin Corporation, Golden-i is a mobile, head-worn computer that has been designed as a wearable replacement for PCs where workers need to keep their hands free, helping to improve safety, productivity and efficiency. It includes Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi® connectivity, and provides a near-eye, 15-inch virtual PC display and near-ear speaker. It uses natural speech recognition and six-axis gesture sensing, and a camera to record and send images or streaming video.

The new Gi-OS software is available now as an emulator for Win32 computers, enabling developers to create applications for the Golden-i headset with voice control and gesture sensing.

Gi-OS provides built-in applications including a fully-featured email program, a file browser, and a media player. Its web browser is specifically designed to make it easy to browse and open links using voice control, and includes support for full HTML5 features. A camera application enables users to record a video, view a live camera feed, or take snapshot images.

The software includes a new high performance graphics subsystem, based on an OpenGL graphics engine, which includes support for transparencies and transition animations to create a professional look and feel. Its sophisticated user interface is comparable to modern laptop or tablet operating systems. Usability has been emphasized at all stages, making it easy to control Golden-i.

To connect to the wider world, a telephone dialer allows Golden-i to pair to a smartphone to make and receive calls, as well as managing contacts. The software also supports audio and video real-time chat between Golden-i and other devices.

Features provided with Gi-OS include home page widgets such as clock, date, email and weather. A help center provides videos to explain how to get the best from Golden-i, while a simple control panel enables users to easily change audio, visual, connectivity and system settings.

“Golden-i is a revolution in mobile computing, and now with Gi-OS it has the operating system that developers need to create high-quality, easy to use applications,” said James Woodall, CEO at Ikanos Consulting.

Ikanos has been involved with Golden-i from an early stage, and is responsible for developing and supporting its software development kit (SDK). The SDK enables developers to quickly and easy create applications to harness the power of Golden-i, and is provided with full documentation including a user guide and style guide.

While Gi-OS and Golden-i provide a fully usable solution with no modifications, the system has the potential to be customized to integrate closely with an existing IT infrastructure, and with enterprise applications. Ikanos can provide expert consultancy, full training and bespoke development to enable any business to make the most of Golden-i, and to adapt Gi-OS to their particular needs.

The Gi-OS Version 1.0 software is available now as a free download, and Golden-i development kits are available now for $2,500, both from the Golden-i developer website at The website provides extensive support for developers, including an FAQ list, example source code, a user forum, and access to experts to answer questions.
