Electronics Patent Attorneys still in demand but no jobs for Chemists

In a recent report on the Intellectual Property sector in the UK, Pete Fellows, MD of Fellows and Associates suggests that the market is tough for practices who are recruiting Patent Attorneys with a technical background in electronics.

The market picture is very mixed at present, ‘in some areas the demand for candidates far outstrips the supply whilst in others the opposite is true’.

In the report, Pete Fellows claims that ‘there are seemingly no Electronics Patent Attorneys looking for new jobs’. Pete suggests that demand is high for Attorneys who have qualified recently but it drops off at a more senior level, ‘because creating partnership positions in the immediate future is problematic, so firms are reluctant to hire people where this is an expectation’.

Phillipa Field, a consultant with Fellows and Associates says that ‘we are currently swamped with demand but for a very specific candidate type, therefore from a firm’s perspective, flexibility is key. Practices that are a little more open to ideas can be more successful in their recruitment campaigns. Pete’s report really highlights this issue’.

The report also covers other technical areas and Pete suggests that there is real cause for optimism for UK Trade Mark Attorneys, ‘it’s a perfect storm of recruitment and for us [trade mark recruitment] is probably the most fun of all our markets at the moment (in the sense that we can satisfy everyone’s requirements relatively easily).’

For Patent Attorneys with a chemistry background the picture is far less optimistic claims Sienna Johal, a Researcher with Fellows and Associates, ‘we have found that firms are simply not very interested in qualified chemists just at the moment and they wish to focus their efforts on other areas of recruitment’.

Pete reports that the area of biotechnology recruitment remains flat but mechanical Patent Attorneys can be a little more optimistic. “We have noticed a definite recent positive trend in respect to demand for mechanical Patent Attorneys” reports Phillipa ‘but we are unsure how sustainable this will be’.

In conclusion, Pete highlights the current difficulties experienced attorneys may find in moving positions and that the market picture is very mixed at present, ‘in some areas the demand for candidates far outstrips the supply whilst in others the opposite is true’.
