To help people better understand the role of genetic counseling in breast health today, Northern Westchester Hospital has published a video that describes the services of The Breast Institute’s board-certified Cancer Genetic Counselor Nancy Cohen, MS, GCG.
In the new video about cancer genetic counseling in New York, Nancy Cohen explains the role of Genetic Counseling Program in The Breast Institute’s continuum of breast health services to women. Patients seek the services of a genetic counselor often as a result of a recent diagnosis of breast cancer in order to make decisions about treatment options. Other women have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer and want to understand their risk of hereditary breast or ovarian cancer.
In genetic counseling sessions, Ms. Cohen helps patients understand information about their genetic risk for breast cancer, as well as how this information may impact other family members.
Unique to the Genetic Counseling Program at Northern Westchester Hospital is that Ms. Cohen schedules counseling sessions herself. This gives patients a chance to speak with Ms. Cohen directly about their concerns and hear from Ms. Cohen what to expect at the genetic counseling session. Being able to provide patients this type of personal guidance is something Ms. Cohen says she particularly enjoys in her role at The Breast Institute.
“What I love about genetic counseling is that it really embodies the phrase ‘knowledge is power,’” says Cohen in the newly published video.
Patients can schedule a genetic counseling appointment directly with Nancy Cohen by visiting The Breast Institute’s website or by calling 914.242.7649.
