When it comes to personal protective equipment, the fashion shows in New York and Milan have nothing on global infrastructure firm Gannett Fleming, Inc.
To encourage employees to think safety from head to toe, Gannett Fleming held a Protective Equipment Fashion Show on June 14 featuring 35 employees dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE) commonly used in the firm’s diverse lines of work—free-climbing bridge inspections, environmental studies, traffic and transportation audits, water treatment plant design, and geospatial engineering.
The “runway models” showcased various styles of gloves, hard hats, boots, vests, harnesses, and suits for the instructional entertainment of a Gannett Fleming audience 400-strong. Designed to protect workers from serious workplace injuries or illnesses resulting from contact with workplace hazards, examples of PPE include fall protection harnesses, eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes, coveralls, gloves, reflective vests, hearing protection, and respirators (OSHA Fact Sheet). Their employees work with the Corporate Safety Group to obtain the right equipment to ensure safety on every job, both in the office and in the field.
“Promoting a safe environment and protecting human life is Gannett Fleming’s highest priority,” says Paula J. Loht, CIH, corporate safety manager of Gannett Fleming, Inc. “The fashion show both entertained and educated staff about the importance of safety equipment, the availability of the gear, and the significance of planning ahead for any task.”
Held during Gannett Fleming’s “Safety Break” at its corporate headquarters in Harrisburg, Pa., the fashion show footage will be used for training the firm’s network of regional office safety coordinators and 2,000 employees.
Each June, the National Safety Council encourages organizations to participate in National Safety Month. In addition to the fashion show during Gannett Fleming’s firm-wide Safety Month, employees throughout the company’s more than 60 offices participated in an array of activities to learn about safe practices for work and home, such as training webinars, trivia contests, and safety break meetings.
Gannett Fleming maintains a below-industry average total recordable incident and experience modification rates.
