On August 3rd, 2012, kids bedding manufacturer, Argington, commented on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement stating that the chemical bisphenol-A, better known as BPA, could no longer be included in the manufacture of baby bottles and the small sealed drink containers known as sippy cups.
The ban on BPA could potentially affect millions of people, as BPA is a key component of more than just food packaging in America. Hundreds of everyday items contain the chemical. MSNBC via the Associated Press reports that, “BPA is found in hundreds of plastic items from water bottles to CDs to dental sealants. Some researchers say ingesting the chemical can interfere with development of the reproductive and nervous systems in babies and young children.”
Argington spokesperson, Clay Darrohn, commented on the chemical ban, stating, “The recent FDA ban on BPA is another vital step in ensuring the safety of our children’s health from the very beginning of their lives. Banning BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups is a vital first step in improving the overall health and well-being of future generations. When there are other alternatives out there to a potentially hazardous chemical, it is irresponsible to continue to use that chemical. Bans like this serve as a constant reminder to Argington to make the most responsible choices and we take responsibility very seriously.”
As studies and recommendations from the FDA continue to increase, the move towards the natural and organic lifestyle continues to grow. The public response will add pressure for companies to use organic and natural products. As healthy options increase and accessibility to healthy options becomes easier, bans such as the recent one on BPA will decrease as industries move towards more natural components.
