You always want to be a part of innovative development,” Stratis said. “By working with us and other partners to address flooding, we were able to have a finished product that all parties can be proud of.

Shea Concrete Products, one of the largest precast concrete manufacturers in New England, has successfully finished a project for Enterprise Bank in Pelham, NH, which included retaining wall, underground storm water storage system, storm water treatment, fire cistern, septic tank and pump chamber, and manholes.

As a result, the project won the 2012 New Hampshire Planners Association Project of the Year, recognizing the work to address flooding, economic development for the community, and recreational opportunities for providing access to a local brook.

Greg Stratis, manager for Shea Concrete Products, said that he was proud that his company played such a pivotal role in this project.

“You always want to be a part of innovative development,” Stratis said. “Enterprise Bank wants to be more than a bank; it wants to be a good neighbor in Pelham. By working with us and other partners to address flooding, as well as providing economic and recreational opportunities for residents, we were able to have a finished product that all parties can be proud of.”

Shea Concrete Products worked with VMD Companies of North Andover, Mass., which was the general contractor for the project. Jim Vitas II, owner of the company, recognized the importance that the expertise and cooperation Shea Concrete Products provided.

“For this project to work, we needed all parties working together. There were numerous challenges involved,” Vitas said. “There were three variances and 11 waivers issued by the town, and the property is on a limited-access highway (New Hampshire Route 38), which provided additional logistical issues. We also wanted to make sure we caused minimal disruption for local residents. Shea Concrete Products certainly held up their end of the project.”

Vitas was particularly impressed with the structure of the wall and the various flood mitigation products Shea Concrete Products provided. “This project had a lot of geo-tech involved and many more precast concrete products were needed than in a similar-sized project. Shea did an unbelievable job on the engineering of these products, especially with the tight deadline that existed. They understood all the issues and handled them smoothly. Enterprise Bank and the community have been quite happy with the result.”

In addition, Shea Concrete Products worked with Kohl Enterprises of North Chelmsford, Mass., which did the installation of the precast products. Don Kohl, owner of the company, said that there were particular challenges with the project.

“There was a great deal of precast concrete that needed to be installed, the general contractor gave us 30 days to complete this task, and right away we saw challenges – such as removing peat as well as flood mitigation,” Kohl said. “However, we were able to overcome those challenges, and Shea Concrete Products understood this. They provided us materials when we needed them, and adjusted to the timeframe and challenges to work with us.”

Beyond being flexible with time, Kohl stated that the quality of the products was apparent. ”For example, the blocks for the wall were engineered perfectly and provided no problems for us. When there were issues that arose, they were able to address them promptly.”

Stratis said this project was one that had very little margin for error. “When you have issues concerning geo-tech as well as adhering to a deadline, you need to make sure you are providing both a quality product and the service to go with it,” Stratis said. “We work well with our GCs and installers, knowing they will get the job done, so it’s up to us to make sure our precast concrete products are ready and to specifications. I am quite happy with how Enterprise Bank turned out.”
