River cruising is a wonderful way to see Europe...

One of the hottest trends in cruising over the past couple years has been the popularity of the river cruise. The emergence of this sector of the cruise industry has been welcomed by the affected cruise lines by “flooding” the rivers with new cruise ships.

Three of the four major river cruise lines (AMA Waterways, Avalon Waterways and Viking River Cruises) were planning to launch new ships in 2012, one of which (Viking) was actually planning to launch six. Additionally, each of the major four was planning to launch new ships in 2013 (four more for Viking).

River cruising is quite different than ocean cruising. Besides the obvious difference that one sails on the interior rivers while the other sails on the open sea, river cruise ships are much smaller than most ocean cruise ships, with the typical ship accommodating about 150 passengers.

River cruising can seem a little pricey, but certain things that are extra on most ocean cruises, like sightseeing excursions and wine at dinner, are generally included on river cruises.

When most people think of river cruising, they think of Europe – and with good reason. River cruising is a wonderful way to see Europe and the bulk of the itineraries sail the rivers of Europe, including the Rhine, the Rhone, the Seine and the Danube. However, there are also itineraries in Africa, Asia, Russia, and South America.

Travel & Tours Unlimited is in the process of putting together a group river cruise from Paris to the Normandy Beaches on Avalon Waterways sailing the River Seine next spring. The cruise begins on May 28, 2013 and ends on June 4, 2013, with a pre and/or post stay in Paris.
