Dr. Fahmi Muhsen Rashid intimates that this book, The Spring Of Life is the start of a series. Beginning with an enchanting vignette entitled “The Great Love,” the poetic cycle runs on through the often false emoticons of a dramatic destiny ending in disappointment and ruin. The female side is key with regard to this phase of the human tragedy and thus it is addressed in detail, with a depth seldom given by men. Justly enough, marriage (the union of the mortal dichotomy into an eternal path) is placed in the middle of the book, a fulcrum with which the mortal weight is lifted with the lever of creation. It is justified by tradition but is challenged by another tradition such that all expectations of human happiness is made vagrant, a false hope.

The author, having studied the dimensions of human existence, has laboured to present a full vision of the human endeavour. Over the pages of the book, Dr. Rashid addresses the many dilemmas of existence. Visions are fulfilled with the help of nature and its images. Such is the complexity of this work that it paradoxically engenders an assurance and a stability, a peace that acknowledges the fact: In order to be, be with God.

At times vertiginous, at times cathartic, Rashid’s style has a subtle bravura that is the domain of those blessed with calm and understanding, a state developed through years of painful experience, long contemplation, and true submission to the will of Allah. All the sadnesses of this world, looked at from the promontory of this unshakeable faith, become the colours that form and move within the earthly sphere.
