In the writing of The Self and Complex Trauma, a new, serious psychological disorder related to post-traumatic stress disorder, Dr. Vito Zepinic relates how he had in mind to give a significant contribution to the wide and complex issues that appeared as outcome to trauma experience and their impact upon the self. Current findings in psychology have identified and studied the psychological stressors which reside on a complex, multi-dimensional continuum in the patients’ experiences. It follows that there is a need for a new category or type of disorder known as Complex Trauma which displays the symptoms of prolonged, repeated and successive traumas.

Complex Trauma develops when the individual is subject to repeated traumas or series of traumas and is incapable of escaping it for an extended period of time. Trauma itself has been defined as the shock reaction of normal psychologies to events that they are helpless to prevent. It develops into a syndrome that is still to be fully studied and understood by experts. Thus, Dr. Zepinic, who has long experience of treating the survivors of this disorder, and his work are on the leading edge of scholarship attempting to describe the sickness and create treatment programs for it.

Furthermore, the author tracks the general progress that has been made on trauma disorders these past two decades. The causes of the newly identified disease are brutal rape or violence, torture, terrorist act, war-related experiences, and combinations of the aforementioned. Hyperarousal or flashbacks are very common. Zepinic lays out the many symptom occurring in more chronic and severe stress reactions. He relates it to space-time contexts, neurological states, as well as the psychological ones for a holistic treatment of the subject. His work will go a long way to combating what is now quite a widespread psychological state and envisions a time when the worst cases can be easily treatable.
