Alpha Systems, a premier provider of electronic patient chart management solutions, hosted 20 students from Burlington County College that are part of the college’s Health Information Technology, Medical Coding or Electronic Health Record programs. Alpha Systems provided a tour to help them better understand how paper is digitized and loaded into a hospital’s document management or EMR/EHR system. A software demonstration also provided students an overview of its Enterprise EDM solution, Alpha ImageWorks® 9000 which supports a hospital's EHR strategy and streamlines workflows such as chart analysis, chart deficiency and coding.

As these students prepare for jobs in the healthcare industry, opportunities to learn about electronic chart management solutions are important, especially with the Meaningful Use requirements and the implementation of ICD-10. Alpha Systems provided helpful information to the students on Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) technology and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Students learned how both work together to help hospitals improve their coding accuracy and quality and ultimately lower their Discharged Not Final Billed (DNFB).

“Scott Griffith and his team at Alpha Systems opened their company doors to show our health information technology students how technology, along with good customer service, is utilized to digitize patient health records and how technology can help with medical coding,” said Lisa K. Ferrante, RHIA, HITECH Project Manager at BCC. “It was a great experience for our students to see the operational side of Alpha Systems and to have the opportunity to speak with key personnel within the organization.”

Kali Ladnier, Health Information Technology student was also appreciative of the event. “I would like to thank everyone at Alpha for the tour of the facility,” said Kali. “It was a great educational experience for students like me to see firsthand the operations of Alpha Systems and to interact with members of the Alpha team. It definitely opened my eyes to other opportunities in the field of health information technology.”
