What all this adds up to is a safer, more cost efficient, less chaotic, and more accessible visitation environment for officers, inmates, and family and friends visiting those inmates.

Washington D.C. Department of Corrections went live with a new inmate visitation management platform on Wednesday July 25th. The new platform, developed by Minneapolis based Renovo Software, will increase the efficiency of the visitation process—consequently reducing operational costs while allowing the facility to conduct significantly more visits each day. Washington D.C. DOC will use Renovo’s system to configure, manage, schedule, and automate their newly installed visitation environment which includes over 100 video visitation stations.
Previous to deploying the new visitation system, visitors were required to wait in long lines and go through pat downs often only to be turned away due to an inmate being moved, put on restriction, or having already met their visitation quota. Inmates had to be escorted to and from the visitation area. Without a predictable visitation schedule, officers could not efficiently plan escorts and coordinate efforts. The result was a high stress environment for visitors, inmates, and officers.
The Renovo visitation management platform allows visitors to go online to register for and schedule visits with an inmate. “The system is designed to allow facilities like D.C. DOC to configure it with their own specific visitation policies, procedures, quotas, and visitor-inmate restrictions,” explained Brian Peters, Director of Customer Accounts for Renovo Software. “When a visit is scheduled, the inmate’s location, restrictions, quota, and availability are all automatically taken into account. Visitors receive a scheduling confirmation, and if it gets cancelled, they’re automatically notified.”
The system utilizes card readers which allow officers to quickly verify a visitor’s identity by simply swiping their ID. “They simply show up, swipe their cards, and begin their visits—no more waiting in long lines only to be turned away,” Peters stated.
Several features of the Renovo system will help to ensure the safety of the public, facility staff, and inmates in Washington D.C. Placing the inmate video visitation stations directly in inmate housing units eliminates the need for officers to escort inmates and reduces contraband traffic into the facility. The system also enables D.C. to monitor and record inmate visits, potentially providing evidence crucial for convicting an alleged criminal.
“What all this adds up to is a safer, more cost efficient, less chaotic, and more accessible visitation environment for officers, inmates, and family and friends visiting those inmates,” Peters pointed out. Officials now expect to be able to accommodate about 400 visits per day, more than twice as many as were previously conducted. In addition, the efficiency of the system will allow several corrections officers to be moved from visitation supervision to more mission critical enforcement duties.
For almost a decade, Renovo’s visitation management solution has helped both large and small correctional facilities cut the chaos out of their visitation centers. With over 100 customers across the US, Renovo’s visitation solution continues to introduce next generation features and functionality.
In addition, Renovo offers the most advanced revenue generation options of any solution on the market, helping facilities achieve maximum efficiency with minimal budgets. Whether offering on-premise video visits, internet video visits or simply scheduling and managing face-to-face visits, Renovo can help correctional facilities find efficiencies, cut costs, and generate revenue each step of the way.
