Being aware of these safety precautions may keep both employers and employees safe while finishing the summer months strong.

The locally based Michigan insurance agency, Barron Insurance & Financial Services, provides tips to help local builders, construction workers and all other professionals that may be working in the hot August sun. While employers may not be able to avoid having employees working in these conditions, they can prevent dehydration and a heat stroke by taking the proper precautions. If not, they may find their workers filing workers compensation claims much sooner than later.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), thousands of workers become sick from the exposure of heat and dehydration each year. Over the past 20 years, at least 500 U.S. workers have even died due to serious injuries caused by heat stress. With such statistics, the agency feels it is important to address the dangers of dehydration and provide a few safety rules to follow. It is important for employers to:

  •     Supply a sufficient amount of cool water to their workers, whether bottled water or from a cooler
  •     Encourage employees to drink AT LEAST 4 to 8 ounces of water every 15 minutes or so
  •     Keep a close eye on employees who are working slow, seem exhausted or dizzy
  •     Allow workers to take frequent rest breaks (once every half hour or so)
  •     Provide sports drinks
  •     Discourage workers to drink sugary soda, caffeinated drinks or alcoholic beverages (all can add to dehydration)
  •     Dismiss workers early on the hottest days of the year
  •     Advise workers to wear light-colored clothing versus dark

Being aware of these safety precautions may keep both employers and employees safe while finishing the summer months strong. By following the above tips, workers will also not have to worry about workers compensation claims due to dehydration and heat-related injuries. If an accident does occur, the agents at Barron Insurance & Financial Services will be ready to support. The Michigan insurance agency is dedicated to protecting businesses with the right coverage in the event of an injury or accident on the job site. Until then, Barron Insurance & Financial Services wishes all employees a safe and cool end of the summer!
