Online interactive training boosts safety of tower workers

The popular RF awareness training course offered by LBA Group Inc. has been revised and updated—again—to incorporate AM detuning hazards. The latest upgrade is a response to the increasing frequency of workers climbing wireless towers to detune them, thereby eliminating interference for nearby AM broadcast facilities.

The course prepares workers to recognize the AM-generated RF and, rather than be dangerously startled by it, to safely manage the exposure. RF awareness course administrator Byron Johnson says the expansion of the training product reflects positive feedback from course-takers and company safety managers.

“We strive to make our RF safety courses totally relevant to the evolving certification needs of the wireless infrastructure industry,” says Johnson.

The OSHA-compliant training course was developed in 2011 to help protect wireless industry workers from unhealthy levels of radio frequency. The AM component is the third upgrade. A Spanish-language edition of the course was released to help Spanish-speaking workers in the U.S. and abroad become properly trained. LBA also introduced an online management feature that lets safety managers track personnel certifications.

Other adaptations of the course and related safety courses are being developed by LBA.

Though created for the wireless industry, the RF safety course is suitable for many other at-risk workers, including landscape personnel, roofers, sign installers, and building maintenance staff, to name a few. LBA turned to its INARTE-certified RF engineers to create the fully interactive course, which is economical and intuitively accessed. Because it is online, a worker can work through the course outside of his working hours and at his own pace.

LBA is offering the course at low group rates so that employers can have entire work crews earn individual certificates. The RF awareness course certificate is renewable annually to help workers remain in compliance with OSHA practices. A special credit is issued course-takers who are re-certifying.
