New erotic thriller makes debut in U.S.

“Accidental author” Indigo Bloome is a 40-something married mother of two who lives in rural Australia. Her typical day consists of picking up after her kids, rushing to get dinner on the table and managing a myriad other household chores, as most moms do. Indigo is also smart, accomplished and ambitious: she recently completed her MBA after working in the cutthroat finance world for many years. In her spare time, she enjoys museums, going to the opera and wanted to be a private detective when she was twelve. She’s cultured, yet ordinary… and happens to be an author who started writing 20 months ago when she was under the weather and housebound for a few weeks. The result? Indigo Bloome has written a hot new erotic trilogy that Australian readers cannot put down.

Destined To Play (Avon, On Sale now in digital edition, e- ISBN 9780062243461; $9.99; Trade Paperback on-sale September 11, 2012; ISBN: 9780062243478; $13.99), the first installment in Bloome’s trilogy, is currently number four on Australian bestseller lists (immediately behind the Fifty Shades trilogy) and is rapidly making its presence known universally with tons of press coverage in Britain and Australia.

American readers are quite understandably excited about getting Destined to Play into their hands and onto their e-readers. This scenario may seem all too familiar to some—the Fifty Shades trilogy also originated in Australia before exploding onto the erotica scene worldwide. This edgy, titillating trilogy, however, may garner a larger reader response. “We’ve seen Australian erotica go incredibly mainstream,” comments HarperCollins Australian publishing director Shona Martyn. “It may very well be that we have been long comfortable with books featuring incendiary plotlines and explicit sensuality; and now the rest of the world is hungry for the erotic literature that has been sizzling on our bestseller lists here.”

In fact, it does appear that the land down under is pioneering fiction about…the things going on down…there. Selwa Anthony, Indigo Bloome’s agent, talks about reading erotica: “This is private and feels safe, and exercises the imagination, and turns [women] on in a way [women] might like to be turned on. There’s always been a lot of it around, but it’s now well written, with a good storyline and characters that feel real rather than just pages of sex. It’s exciting, but also it’s fun.” With erotica evolving into more of an appreciated and legitimatized genre, authors, agents, publishers and readers alike know that the revitalized genre is here to stay. “Erotica is experiencing a surge in reader attention here in the States,” says Liate Stehlik, senior vice president and publisher, William Morrow and Avon Books. “We are always looking to publish high quality commercial fiction – and when our colleagues in the United Kingdom and Australia alerted us to Destined to Play, our instincts told us we had a global hit on our hands with this title.”

Destined To Play is provocative, boundary-pushing erotica artfully fused with a gripping thriller aspect that keeps readers fervently turning pages. “I’d had enough of dewy-eyed virgins and wanted to know how far you can be pushed in terms of fantasy,” says Bloome. It’s undeniable that the content of Destined To Play is steamy and the sex scenes are salacious. The book is masterfully written, offering Fifty Shades readers a more evolved, sophisticated reading experience, something the erotica world has been waiting for.

About the Book:
Dr. Alexandra Blake is married with two kids and leads a fairly normal life aside from the fact that she is a wildly successful psychologist who delivers countless lectures around Australia. Dr. Jeremy Quinn, an old study buddy, best friend and lover from her years in university does ground breaking medical research in a similar field as Alexandra. One of the most well respected and pre-eminent medical research doctors in the world, Jeremy has been doing research on how senses, or a lack thereof, contribute to the way people experience certain things, especially sexual encounters. After doing her thesis on similar material and continuing to do pertinent research, Alexandra is familiar with the topic and very intrigued when Jeremy suggests they stay in his hotel room for 48 hours together—her without the sense of sight for the two days. Work and pleasure become one as the two push boundaries and experience things that few have before.

Shona Martyn, Publishing Director of HarperCollins Australia said that Bloome’s female lead in Destined To Play is not a naïve virgin like Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey, but an assertive, experienced woman with a past. Martyn states, “It’s on a different level, more sophisticated. The heroine is a mature woman in a very mature scenario; and the thriller aspect of the trilogy rapidly escalates reader anticipation.”
