“With the iPad, we’re not only giving people access to cutting-edge technology, we’re enabling them to stay grounded and more comfortable in a way that mimics their life at home," says Joshua Jacobs, VP at Windsor Healthcare.
PLAINSBORO, N.J. (PRWEB) August 09, 2012
Windsor Healthcare, owner of nine sub-acute and nursing facilities in New Jersey, is continuing to provide a highly personalized patient experience with a cutting-edge new program. The company has partnered with PadInMotion to offer an innovative iPad service at its Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center location that promises to enhance participating patients’ and residents’ experiences in the facility.
Patients, residents, family, and friends now have the ability to rent customizable iPads that come pre-loaded with their choice of content, including movies, television shows, books, newspapers, and magazines. Combined with complimentary WiFi, it is now easier than ever to stay connected while at Merwick.
“I don’t think there’s any other skilled nursing facility in America that is offering this kind of service,” said Joshua Jacobs, Vice President at Windsor Healthcare. “With the iPad, we’re not only giving people access to cutting-edge technology, we’re enabling them to stay grounded and more comfortable in a way that mimics their life at home. For example, if a patient is used to reading the Wall Street Journal every day at home, we can set up a subscription for the time they’re with us to have each day’s Wall Street Journal delivered straight to their iPad. And with the iPad’s built-in video chat feature, patients can enjoy virtual visits from friends and family who might not otherwise be able to stop by in person.”
Windsor Healthcare also views the iPad as therapeutic, due to its touch screen sensibility, and plans to use the device as a medical knowledge base for patients. The iPads can be stocked with guides that detail the exercise plans patients will be asked to complete once they return home, allowing them to prepare for those exercises on their own while still at the Merwick facility. Documents can also be added to help educate patients about their condition.
PadInMotion handles the rental and distribution of the devices and is onsite at Merwick every day to take orders, deliver and collect iPads, and make sure patients are comfortable using their new tool. Renters pay as little as $10 per day for short-term rental of the iPad, plus the cost of any additional media they have pre-loaded. Visits of patients getting help transitioning from hospital to home at Merwick’s sub-acute center typically range from one to two weeks, keeping overall costs reasonable.
“We view this program as a health benefit for our patients,” Jacobs said. “If someone watches a particular TV program or surfs the Internet at home, that’s their routine. If they wake up at a Windsor health community and can’t do what they normally enjoy, it’s not just disappointing and perhaps boring – it slows recovery from surgery or illness. The iPad can offer a healthcare environment that is more like home and enables better health outcomes, which is the goal of our company”
“We also take great care in disinfecting the iPads,” said Nir Altman, Co-Founder of PadInMotion. “One of my partners is a cardiologist, and we follow the same procedures that hospitals follow to disinfect electronic devices. Then we pre-load the iPad with the requests from the next patient.”
Although the program is still in its infancy, it is already experiencing success, as patients, as well as their visitors, are showing an interest in the program.
"The iPad service has made it convenient for me to a read a book in an easy and comfortable way," said Susan Johnson, a short-term rehabilitation patient at Merwick. Other patients have expressed enjoyment at being able to catch up on TV shows they may have missed or movies they've been meaning to see for years.
“Patients are loving it,” Altman said. “The goal is to give patients a better healthcare experience. It’s fantastic to partner with a company like Windsor, which is looking for innovative ways to improve patient care.”
