Bernhard Langer captured an impressive 15th title on the Champions Tour at the 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn., and returned victorious to South Florida, where the German golfer lives in Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton.
Langer, 54, shot a final-round score of 62 and finished at 18 under par to win. Following Langer in third place was Hobe Sound resident and well-known golfer Olin Browne. Browne, 53, shot a 66 in the final round and ended at 15 under par to tie Kenny Perry.
Tequesta resident and storied contender Mark “Calc” Calcavecchia finished tied for 10th place after a final-round score of 66. The 52-year-old, who lives in one of the many picturesque Loxahatchee River homes, shot an 11 under. Calcavecchia tied Mark O’Meara, Joey Sindelar, Gil Morgan, Steve Pate and Eduardo Romero.
Lance Ten Broeck, 56, of Singer Island, finished in 16th place at 10 under par, with a score of 70 in the final round. Singer Island, in Riviera Beach, is known not so much for its golfing but, rather, for its gorgeous oceanfront condos for sale, sandy beaches and Anastasia limestone reef. Ten Broeck, who coaches throughout the area in addition to holding his Tour car, tied Fred Funk and D.A. Weibring.
Three more locals finished out the field in the tournament that ended Langer’s victory drought, which stood at 24 events, his longest ever. Hobe Sound resident Nick Price came in 39th place, tying Ted Schulz, Brad Bryant, Jay Haas, Mike Goodes, Jim Gallagher Jr. and Jim Rutledge. The 55-year-old golfer finished with a final-round score of 67 at five under par.
P.H. Horgan III and Dana Quigley, both of West Palm Beach – home of Bay Hill Estates and Ibis Golf & Country Club – came in 59th and 73rd place, respectively. Horgan, 52, ended the tournament even with par and with a 72 in the final round. He tied Bobby Wadkins, Vicente Fernandez, Hal Sutton, Kirk Triplett, Rod Spittle, Chip Beck and Brad Faxon.
Quigley, 65, shot a 73 in the final round, with three over par.
