We are so overwhelmed by all the remarkable support we've received on Kickstarter. I am so excited that our many backers will be receiving what I believe is the next best thing for the home-cook industry.

Stoughton Steel turned to the internet to raise funds for their latest endeavor, The Baking Steel, a steel baking stone used to create Neapolitan style pizza at home and rustic breads. In light of recent economic conditions, companies are taking advantage of innovative crowdfunding websites to secure worldwide visibility and funding assistance for their new product ventures. In their case this solution was Kickstarter.com.

The Kickstarter model allows backers to make micro-investments in the Baking Steel project which will enable the company to launch their first production run. In exchange for their investments, backers receive Baking Steel products as well as the gratification of being a vital part of our exciting new effort.
In line with kickstarter.com guidelines, each project has a set number of days to raise funds or the company receives nothing. "We hit our initial goal of $3000, in less than 24 hours," stated project creator, Andris Lagsdin. "We are so overwhelmed by all the remarkable support we've received on Kickstarter. I am so excited that our many backers will be receiving what I believe is the next best thing for the home-cook industry. We would love to take this effort to the next level, so we can bring the Baking Steel into even more homes.”

The idea for the product was born after reading excerpts from Nathan Myhrvold’s Modernist Cuisine. Brick ovens generally cook at or around 800º, much hotter than the average home oven which usually reaches temperatures of 500º. A steel sheet is more conductive than the typical brick oven’s stone so it can cook fast at a lower temperature. Investing in a brick oven can cost thousands of dollars. The Baking Steel helps create the crust you crave at a cost more consumers can afford.

The Baking Steel was developed with the environment in mind. Steel is one of the most recycled materials on the planet and is practically indestructible. Seasoned with a proprietary oil blend, the Baking Steel arrives ready to use from day one.

The Baking Steel is proudly manufactured on site at our facility in Hanover, Massachusetts.
