Published by The Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation (IIARF), Sawyer’s Guide for Internal Auditors has undergone a significant update. Sawyer’s is internal auditing’s most widely-acknowledged reference book, and this 6th edition includes timely and relevant information in a fresh design most suitable for today’s professional internal audit practitioners.

“It’s critical to internal auditors everywhere that we continue the legacy of Larry Sawyer – original author of Sawyer’s Guide for Internal Auditors,” said IIARF Vice President Margie Bastolla, CIA. “He was a preeminent thought leader of the profession and many of his teachings are timeless. As such, his book has been a staple on internal audit reference bookshelves for years. This update addresses the internal audit practitioners’ needs with a user-friendly format, new research, and many references to emerging skill-set requirements.”

Three volumes comprise the 6th edition of Sawyer’s Guide for Internal Auditors. New to this edition, Volume 3: Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance Essentials defines and discusses in separate chapters governance, risk management, compliance, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability. It also describes the roles of internal auditors in assessing fraud, ethics, and people risk.

“Throughout the document, the 6th edition has a concise writing style, a consistent voice and modern professional language,” says Jim Key, CIA, project manager for the book. “The materials contain multiple cross-references and are rich with references, exhibits, and citations.”

Additional new features include:

  •     A 73-word glossary in all three volumes.
  •     Smyth-sewn binding for improved access.
  •     A reader-friendly index.

“When the original edition of Sawyer’s came out in 1973, it marked the first time that internal auditing was defined and explained in such a comprehensive and meaningful way,” said IIA President and CEO Richard Chambers, CIA, CRMA, CGAP, CCSA. “It quickly became – and has remained - one of the most valuable resources for internal audit practitioners at every level.”
