Two Massachusetts Water Sports Companies Partner on SUP Fishing Product Launch
Freedom Hawk Kayaks and VEC Surfboards have introduced the first stand up paddleboard for the SUP fishing market designed by East Coast fisherman and surfers. Born from a shared passion for the water, the two Massachusetts-based sporting outfits have formed a unique partnership to manufacture and market the best paddleboard specially designed for stand up fishing in all types of water. The new board features innovative tunnel channels and an internal keel for superior tracking in extremely shallow water when used without its removable “skeg” or fin. In addition, the Predator offers recessed leash cups to tie down tackle and gear, a deck traction pad, recessed carry handle, and venting plug.
“Because of the SUP craze, dealers have been pushing us to put our design mark on a novel SUP, one that is stable enough to stand and fish from yet versatile and lightweight for cruising the shallows for a combination of exercise and fun,” said Freedom Hawk Kayaks President David Hadden. “We partnered with VEC out in Cape Cod to craft a unique fishing SUP weighing less than 35 pounds with the right combination of stability and efficiency.”
The Predator SUP is 11 feet long and 35 inches wide. Unlike some paddleboards, the Predator is made in the United States with high-density foam, an EPS Core, and the highest marine-grade, UV-resistant epoxy. The board’s asymmetrical design has a forward standing area for drift and sight fishing, while the V-shaped bow sheds water in a light chop that most boards cannot handle.
“We know surfboards, the SUP culture, and marketplace, but we are not hardcore fishermen,” said VEC Surfboards President Shawn Vecchione. “The alliance with Freedom Hawk is a natural fit because they are as passionate about fishing as we are about surfing.”
Before working with Freedom Hawk, Vecchione engineered his own custom SUP and has been fishing for bluefish and stripers since he returned to “The Cape” five years ago. Shawn grew up in Barnstable, Massachusetts, but lived in Hawaii for 20 years working with legendary surfboard designers Dick Brewer, Bobby Allen, and Billy Hamilton.
“We couldn’t have found a better board shaper and waterman if we had gone to California or Hawaii,” added Hadden. “After months of working with Shawn, prototyping and testing different designs, we know we nailed it in the Predator. This board is designed literally from the skeg up to come as close to kayak fishing experience as possible.”
The Predator fishing SUP was introduced at the ICAST Fishing Show in July and is now available in a variety of colors (Hi-Optic Yellow, Biscayne Blue, and Aquamarine) with an MSRP of $1,895. For more information and sales, contact David Hadden at (978) 225-1511.
