Shangri-la, in China’s Yunnan Province, is known for its stunning natural beauty and cultural diversity. Explore Tibet, a Tibetan-owned Tibet travel agency based in Lhasa now offers tours of the mountains and villages of this unique place.
“Visitors can explore the jagged mountains, valleys filled with lush tropical foliage, and waterfalls cascading hundreds of feet off steep, rocky gorges,” Explore Tibet said. “Shangri-la lies at the cultural intersection of China, Tibet and Southeast Asia, and the winding roads are dotted with authentic villages where travelers can experience the art and culture of the Tibetan, Yi, and Naxi people.”
The Tibet tour begins with a visit to a famous monastery of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, called the Ganden Songtsan Ling Monastery. The monastery was built during the 17th century and houses 500 monks. Travelers will also visit a pottery village of the ethnic Naxi, who still make pottery in the traditional style.
Travelers will take a driving tour through the Yangtze gorges and over several stunning mountain passes, stopping to visit traditional villages and remote temples hidden along the course of the Mekong River.
The trek begins along the Salween-Mekong range, following tributaries and streams of the Mekong. The trail crosses some of the most pristine alpine forest in southwest China and Southeast Asia. The beauty of this area draws trekkers, Tibetan religious pilgrims, and scientists studying the area’s rare flora and fauna. Highlights of the trek include a visit to a hot springs, stone engravings of Buddhist deities and scriptures, and ancient caves used in religious practice.
