The Orange County Convention Center is one of the top convention centers in the country, making Orlando a very desirable location for multi-day conferences and conventions, including those that are open to the public. For late summer/fall 2012, there are several high-profile conventions coming to the OCCC, including the Orlando RV Show, Star Wars Celebration 6, Surf Expo, Orlando Fall Home & Garden Show/Orlando Boat Show, Orlando Home Show, Southern Women’s Show, Central Florida International Auto Show, and the very popular American Kennel Club/Eukanuba National Championship dog show.
“If people are coming to Orlando for a convention, they really should set aside some time to take in some of the local attractions,” said Sunil Govind, president of Orlandoescape.com. “Everything is so centrally located that visitors can easily make a side trip to a theme park and bring the family along.”
One of Govind’s top suggestions is to stay at a hotel on International Drive, for easy access to the OCCC as well as some of Orlando’s most popular attractions, including SeaWorld, Discovery Cove and Aquatica, which are all on the south end of International Drive. Orlandoescape.com lists special deals for several of I-Drive’s convention area hotels, including Rosen Inn, Quality Inn International, Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando, Sheraton Vistana Villages, Ramada Plaza Resort & Suites, Hampton Inn and Suites, and the Lake Eve Resort.
Other local attractions, such as Wet ‘n Wild water park, Fun Spot, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Wonderworks, and Titanic: The Experience, are within walking distance from most I-Drive hotels, and the I-Ride Trolleys are a convenient, economical way to get around Orlando’s main tourist district.
Govind also advises if time permits, arrive a day or two early, or leave a day or two later to take in a trip to Walt Disney World or Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure. “Some conventions for out of state visitors already set aside time for theme park side trips, but it might also be possible to schedule some time in your personal schedule so you can enjoy the best of both worlds during your stay in Orlando,” he said.
