The 2011 Distinguished Credit Union award, presented to the Groton, Connecticut branch serving SUBASE New London, is the sixth consecutive win for Navy Federal Credit Union. The award is highly prized in the credit union sector, as the Installation Commander must make the nomination on behalf of the on-base credit union to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy.
Navy Federal was proud that 44 out of its 75 on-base branches also received distinguished service nominations; 40 for Navy and Marine Corps installations, 3 for Army, and one for an Air Force branch.
The SUBASE New London area is prone to flooding and heavy rains and suffered greatly in the past year in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. “Members and non-members in the Groton area have endured trying times, remarked Steve Romano, vice president, branch operations. “ As a credit union founded in service for the military and their families, it’s our duty to be there for them when they need it most.”
The past year’s events that proved trying for the nation and challenging for the military community became moments of action in carrying out the credit union’s mission to go above and beyond for their members.
Most notably during the national debt crisis when a government shutdown threatened to halt military pay for an unknown period, Dawson moved on behalf of the credit union’s thousands of active duty military families, guaranteeing the direct deposit of their pay regardless of Congress’ action.
The credit union also succeeds not just in being conscientious of the unique needs of the military, but also in making them a priority to fulfill. The result--products such as Active Duty Checking® that pays up to $20 in ATM fee rebates—the highest amount available among competitors. Custom-made services such as early direct deposit of pay for active duty and retired military and worldwide mobile banking are ready solutions for Navy Federal’s actively mobile military families.
“To be the recipient of this award is to be recognized by the men and women who sacrifice so much for the nation, as a true partner in support of their families and their livelihood,” said President and CEO, Cutler Dawson. “It is an honor and a privilege.”
