CIEE, the world leader in international exchange, announces the opening of its third study center in Brazil and the first U.S. study center in Rio de Janeiro.

As the first and only U.S. international education organization in Rio, CIEE offers students unprecedented access to one of the world’s fastest growing economies in a city that is a central force in today’s global community.

As the world leader in study abroad opportunities for students in Latin America, CIEE is proud to announce the opening of the first U.S. study center in the cultural center of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

CIEE: Rio de Janeiro expands CIEE’s extensive list of Brazilian study abroad programs, providing students with even more opportunities to study language, culture, history, business, science, and other academic disciplines in one of three CIEE Brazilian locations: Sao Paulo, Salvador da Bahia, and Rio de Janeiro. As the first and only U.S. international education organization in Rio, CIEE offers students unprecedented access to one of the world’s fastest growing economies in a city that is a central force in today’s global community.

CIEE: Rio de Janeiro provides students with access to the full range of academic programs—offered in both Portuguese and English—at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), the top-rated private university in Brazil. Students interested in studying abroad in Brazil can now explore one of seven rigorous semester, summer, and winter study abroad programs that bring Brazilian culture to life while advancing students’ major requirements.

Consistent with CIEE’s tradition of providing exemplary language and culture experiences in all of its study locations, students attending CIEE: Rio will enjoy intensive classes in Portuguese language, multiple excursions including a tour of the Tijuca Forest (a hand-planted rainforest in the city), a visit to the Christ Statue, percussion lessons in a favela, and a day trip to the historic mountain city of Petropolis.

According to CIEE: Rio Director Matt Ryan, “CIEE’s study abroad program in Rio is unique because we partner with the perennial top-rated private university in Brazil and we offer exceptional educational programs, cultural activities, and community engagement activities. Most importantly, our staff includes both Americans and Brazilians. Together, we represent a study abroad team that intimately knows Rio de Janeiro and understands the needs of today’s students, allowing us to offer our students the very best student support in the industry.”

Ryan provides students with more than 10 years of experience living, teaching, and leading student programs in Brazil. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Matt met his future wife Camila de Queiroz Ryan, a language instructor, during a visit to Rio de Janeiro in 2002. Together they have developed a series of unique local partnerships and service opportunities that truly make a difference in the lives of students and the communities they serve via CIEE’s rich service and community engagement opportunities.

The CIEE: Rio Study Center is ideally located in the world famous neighborhood of Copacabana, close to student accommodations, a short bus ride or subway journey to PUC-Rio’s campus, and blocks from the most renowned beach in the Americas. An alternative home base for CIEE students in addition to their homestays and PUC-Rio, the CIEE Study Center features office and classroom space, student lounges, and study areas. “The Rio study center gives students a healthy, intellectually enticing home-like atmosphere where they can meet each other, study, exchange ideas, and seek advice from CIEE staff,” emphasizes Ryan.

CIEE’s inaugural Summer Intensive Language and Culture study abroad program began in July with 21 students from colleges and universities around the U.S. participating. Programs in business and economics; environmental and sustainable development studies; and media, design, and social communications—considered to be some of PUC-Rio’s strongest programs—will be offered to CIEE study abroad students starting in the January and spring 2013 terms along with three additional programs.

Students focused on language study can enroll in CIEE’s month-long intensive Portuguese program in January or July. These summer and winter intensive programs are also an integrated part of CIEE’s full-semester programs, providing an opportunity for rigorous language study that is unparalleled in the industry.

The opening of CIEE: Rio brings the total number of study abroad programs sponsored by CIEE in Latin America and the Caribbean to 38, offered in 13 cities and nine countries. For more than 25 years, CIEE has been the study abroad leader in the Americas, supporting more than 350 member institutions and helping more than 800 students study throughout the region each year.

For more than 65 years, CIEE has been the world’s leading non-profit academic and international exchange program provider. Since 1947, CIEE has provided thousands of American and international students with exemplary academic and cultural experiences. Today, CIEE operates full-year, semester, and short-term programs in more than 60 cities and 42 countries.
