The City of Kansas City, MO Selects e-Builder as Its Project Management System for Capital Improvement Projects

More cities are turning to construction program management software to control capital project costs, and to enable efficient monitoring and reporting capabilities.

e-Builder, the pioneer in fully integrated, cloud-based construction program management software, announced today that it has been selected by The City of Kansas City to provide a comprehensive project management system for management and tracking of capital improvement projects, including water, sewer, roads, facility construction, parks, and other construction projects. The selection of e-Builder was part of an effort by the City to provide transparency to citizens, increase City Department efficiency, and promote environmentally friendly policies. e-Builder will replace disparate software systems as a single, City-wide solution.

e-Builder will be used primarily to budget, plan, and manage construction volume of about $250,000,000, with approximately 225 projects in some stage of design or construction on a yearly basis. Additional departments, including City Planning and Development, will utilize e-Builder for electronic document submittal and approval. To achieve these goals, the City will use e-Builder’s integrated Cost, Documents, Processes, Bidding, Schedule, and Reporting modules.

The City has used various Project Management packages such as Primavera and custom based solutions. However, these solutions were neither geared for use on capital construction, nor owner centric. In addition, the disparate nature of the systems made getting access to information in a timely manner unfeasible – sometimes it would take weeks to compile and consolidate information for reporting purposes.

e-Builder will also provide an electronic document controls system to automate and streamline the submittal process, including review and approval, versioning, and re-submittal tracking. In addition, e-Builder will integrate with KIVA (a permit and plan review software), Primavera and Microsoft Active Directory. The integration with KIVA will enable City staff to move away from a paper based process for issuing permits and tracking comments to submittals. “We are excited for the increased efficiency of using a single system as well as the ease of reporting and transparency of project information,” says Patrick Klein, Assistant City Manager.
