District leaders learn ways to avoid common mistakes during September 18, 2012 webinar.

Understanding new legislative provisions is essential for district special education (SPED) leaders in order to avoid legal entanglements throughout the school year. To help understand these new laws and avoid legal pitfalls, PresenceLearning, the leading provider of live online speech therapy for schools, is hosting a free webinar, titled “The Five Legal Pitfalls SPED Directors Must Avoid This Year,” on Tuesday, September 18th at 1:00 pm ET (10:00 am PT). To register for the webinar, visit http://pages.presencelearning.com/spedahead4.

During the webinar, Charles L. Weatherly, Sr., a founding partner of the Weatherly Law Firm, LLP and one of the nation’s leading SPED attorneys, will look at specific topics that district SPED leaders should be aware of and provide ways that they can avoid legal pitfalls and common mistakes associated with these topics. The transition to the Common Core State Standards, the growing awareness of bullying, the reauthorization of IDEA, the implementation of RTI, and the growth in children with autism and related communication disorders will be discussed during the webinar.

By attending the webinar, participants will learn:

  •     What they can do to avoid SPED procedural compliance mistakes with IDEA.
  •     The most common record-keeping errors districts make with special-needs students.
  •     How to document their efforts to address bullying and harassment cases.
  •     Legal considerations when providing outside services of SLPs and other experts to help autistic students.
  •     Why fulfilling SPED obligations with RTI could present legal issues.

This webinar is the fourth in a series of free webinars sponsored by PresenceLearning. The webinar series, entitled “SPED Ahead” New Realities, New Choices – A Forum for School Leaders,” brings together thought leaders who are re-thinking the way special education services, especially speech-language pathology services, are delivered.
