On August 10th, 2012, Spartan Race announced that two Ultimate Fighting Champion fighters, Jamie Varner and Jim Miller, will be competing in upcoming Spartan Races.
As both fighters prepare for their respective race, they will also be building teams to compete alongside them; one of their trainers will also be involved in the event. As the fighters get Spartan ready, video blogs of training sessions will be posted on their social media channels. Fans will get to see how professional fighters train for the World’s Premier Obstacle Racing challenge, Spartan Race. While Jamie Varner’s race site and date have yet to be determined, Jim Miller will be competing in the Vernon, New Jersey Spartan Race in early September.
In addition to pre and post race video interviews, Varner and Miller will be promoting the race across a variety of mediums, including magazines and social networks. Sponsorship opportunities for the fighters are also available. As a crossover event, this partnership will go far to raise awareness and visibility of the connections that exist in the Spartan Race and UFC communities solid opportunity to raise the visibility and awareness for both Spartan Race and the UFC.
Both fighters have expressed their excitement to be involved in the Spartan Race. Jamie Varner is looking forward to the challenge, as it has a personal meaning to him, “I am extremely excited to partner with Spartan Race. The event is very intriguing to me for a number of reasons. One, because I am a competitor and love to test my skills at anything and everything. This event has a number of tough obstacles and elements that will test my courage, skill and endurance. Two, my family tree links back to Sparta so I almost feel as if competing in Spartan Race will be honoring my family.” While Varner is a trained fighter, the athlete acknowledges the contest and challenge ahead of him. “I currently cross train in MMA, swimming, biking, and more but will definitely need to step it up for this race.”
Jim Miller is just as enthusiastic about the unique challenges that the race presents, “As a UFC athlete I am always looking for ways to challenge myself physically and mentally at the highest levels and Spartan Race is the perfect opportunity for me to do so. I am looking forward to participating in the September event in my home state of NJ!”
