ALEXANDRIA BAY, (PRWEB) August 10, 2012
Alexandria Bay’s famous pirate son Bill Johnston provides the folklore behind “Bill Johnston Pirate Days,” an annual event that runs through August 17 in this Thousand Islands community. Like many coastal communities, Alexandria Bay’s pirate tales bring an essence of historic danger in the form of swashbuckling, sword-fighting, grog-guzzling celebrants who reenact the sinking of a British ship and the pillaging of its passengers before putting them ashore to join the festivities. Travelers heading to Alexandria Bay for the festival are booking private Thousand Island vacation rentals for their accommodations through NYVacationRentals.com.
Alexandria Bay folklore places Bill Johnston and his small band of followers in the St. Lawrence Seaway circa 1838, plundering and pillaging the Sir Robert Peel, a British river boat. Johnston and his men robbed the passengers and then put them ashore before sinking the boat; he then retreated to a cave hide-away on nearby Devil’s Island for almost a year.
The Alexandria Bay community celebrates Johnston every year with this annual festival of pirates, which includes reenactments of pirate ships attacking the Village of Alexandria Bay from the St.Lawrence River, as brave villagers try to fight them off. The air is filled with smoke and the sound of musket fire and cannons, and the villagers eventually succumb. Once the mayor surrenders the key to the village to the invading marauders, everyone becomes a pirate. The festivities continue through August 17.
