Kent town, Ashford has seen more new companies set up in the second quarter of the year than any other Q2 on record, according to company formation agents

New business is growing Ashford

The record number of new companies that have been set up in Ashford this quarter is a sign that the regeneration of East Kent is working.

Ashford: Kent town, Ashford has experienced a record second quarter in terms of new company formation. There have been 253 new companies set up in Q2, beating the previous record of 238 in Q2 of 2003.

The record number of new companies coincides with the new ‘Grow For It’ campaign launched by Kent County Council this month. Green technologies, tourism and scientific research are the focus of the campaign, which is set to run over the next three years. The aim is to promote the benefits of locating businesses into the coastal districts of Shepway, Thanet, Dover and Canterbury.

The East Kent region received a setback last year when pharmaceutical company Pfizer – one of the county’s biggest employers – announced it would be pulling out of Sandwich. However, the Pfizer site has now been transformed into the Sandwich Discovery Park, which gives businesses incentives such as tax breaks and lenient planning rules to encourage them to invest locally.

Kent County Council leader, Councillor Paul Carter said:

“We have already helped the creation of Discovery Park, which allowed us to maintain an economic future after the departure of Pfizer.

“And we worked incredibly hard to deliver better connectivity to London through the high Speed train service, which will put the capital within an hours’ reach.

“East Kent is unique and has vast potential to grow its economy.”

Managing Director of, Peter Valaitis said:

“The record number of new companies that have been set up in Ashford this quarter is a sign that the regeneration of East Kent is working. The county council is working hard to attract new business, and their plan seems to have been successful.”

The Ashford economy will no doubt feel the positive effects of the East Kent regeneration project for years to come, meaning the record number of new companies may be broken fairly soon.
