In thirty-five years as a psychotherapist and teacher, I’ve noticed that many women have a blind spot that men don’t have. Women are hidden in plain view from themselves under the cloak of ‘caretaker’ and ‘fix-it-all mom’ to all.

Author Joan Shaver offers women the experience of change as she brings attention to what she refers to as “their blind spot; their over-identification with the role of emotional caretaker”. In her new women’s self-help book titled, “Lipstick and Soul, A Guide to Embracing the Power of Feminine Presence”, Shaver lights the way to developing a true and honest relationship with oneself so that any endeavor to change is met with success.

“In thirty-five years as a psychotherapist and teacher, I’ve noticed that many women have a blind spot that men don’t have. Women are hidden in plain view from themselves under the cloak of ‘caretaker’ and ‘fix-it-all mom’ to all. Thus unaware, women are unconsciously dis-enfranchised from their authentic core; the woman within, and this oversight thwarts all efforts to achieve inner harmony and balance. And, as if this is not enough, women are caught in the cultural paradox that promotes change from a masculine perspective; one that is ‘results driven’ as opposed to one that is heart-felt and based in the feminine experience,” says Shaver.

She adds, “I believe women are at a turning point. If women want the peace of heart, power and authentic communication in their relationships they talk about so much, they have to be willing to put their hearts on the line, not just their words.”

Lipstick and Soul offers Shaver’s personal anecdotes and a series of short vignettes, called "Our Story”, inviting the reader to develop a relationship with the author and take a journey of renewal and personal development. The conversational tone, helpful hints and pertinent psychological insights add to a balanced learning approach accessible to every level of reader, and the “Write Your Heart Out” exercises in each chapter help the reader integrate and customize the lessons of feminine power being presented. For a little levity, a segment called “A Little Lipstick, If You Please...” is found at the end of the chapters where the reader will find supportive and creative ways to maintain a spirit of openness and feminine presence as Shaver demystifies the experience of going within.

“The reader can expect to identify and then deconstruct the blind spot that keeps her out of sync with herself. She will learn to differentiate between when the role of emotional caretaker is a conscious choice, and when it is unconsciously used as a default position because she doesn’t know what else to do. In addition, she can expect to reconnect with the inner woman and be shown how to use the power of feminine presence to enhance her relationships and emotional well-being. In other words, she can expect to learn how to use her personal power in a way that works for her as opposed to against her,” Shaver explains.

The author, Joan Shaver, a licensed marriage therapist, earned her B.A. degree in psychology at U.C.L.A and her Master's Degree in Counseling at U.S.C. and began her career teaching one of the first Women and Self-Esteem classes in 1982 through U.C.L.A extension. Most recently, after five years of study, she became certified in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a mind-body approach to psychotherapy. In addition, she has a specialty in the field of alcohol addiction, which she utilizes to help couples in recovery. Joan lives with her husband of twenty years and their cat, Boggie, in Marina Del Rey, California.

The expected release date for “Lipstick and Soul, A Guide to Embracing the Power of Feminine Presence” is this fall. Constructed in three parts, the book offers a comprehensive journey of self-discovery and emotional renewal. Visit the website http://www.Lipstickandsoul.com for more information.
