Wynscape Health and Rehabilitation in Wheaton's Wyndemere Senior Living Community Achieves a Zero Deficiency Status from the Illinois Department of Public Health

"We believe care needs to be of the highest quality 365 days a year to ensure the best possible resident experience." Aimee Musial

Wynscape Health and Rehabilitation in Wheaton’s Wyndemere Senior Living Community, recently received a zero deficiency report from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Only eight percent of all nursing homes in Illinois achieve this score annually. An average of eight deficiencies are found in nursing homes nationwide.

The key to this rare achievement: “Best practices every day,” says Aimee Musial, Administrator for Wynscape. “This report is a direct reflection of our staff’s effort to do the right thing all the time in order to ensure the best possible resident experience.”

The IDPH surveys Illinois’ 1,200 nursing homes each year to make sure they meet regulatory requirements. These standards are put in place to promote optimal outcomes and quality of life for all residents in the state’s long term care communities.

Rigorous Process
A team of surveyors, including four registered nurses and a registered dietitian, spent four days at Wynscape reviewing processes to ensure compliance in every operation. “Everything is evaluated, from nursing and social work, to dietary, housekeeping and admissions,” says Musial. “The survey is unscheduled, and designed to provide a very detailed evaluation of our services. That’s why care needs to be of the highest quality 365 days a year.”

Measurements include achieving positive outcomes for short term rehabilitation patients to ensure their safe return home; preventing avoidable adverse outcomes for management of wounds, falls and infection; and assessing a plan of care that ensures resident satisfaction.

“The state surveyors collect direct feedback from residents and their families to get a real sense for the quality of life here at Wynscape,” says Musial. “They ask questions regarding meal service, responsiveness to care needs, availability of activities that keep mind and body engaged, and the culture of respect and dignity at the community. We can confidently expect a positive response to these questions because they are the foundation of the programs we have put in place to enhance the lives of our residents.”

The zero deficiency rating comes on the heels of Wynscape’s recent national Five-Star Rating from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and a #44 ranking for the state of Illinois in the 2012 US News Best Nursing Homes report. All were earned for excellence in the areas of Health Inspections, Staffing and Quality Measures. The Five-Star rating, zero deficiency report and US News Best Nursing Homes report are made available to the public to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily.
