Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 14, 2012
Kenwood Academy alumnus and Chicago Bulls’ back-up center, Nazr Mohammed, will host Kenwood Academy’s first capital improvements fundraiser on Friday, August 24, 2012, at Pazzo’s, 311 S. Wacker Drive, at 7PM.
The Nazr Mohammed Foundation’s Kenwood Academy Capital Improvements Fundraiser is their inaugural event, and the first event of its kind for Kenwood Academy.
Mohammed will be assisted by fellow Kenwood Academy alumni including WGCI on-air personality, Kenya Simone and comedienne Erica Watson ("Precious," NBC, TV Guide Network, BET) who will be the MC’s of the evening.
The fundraising event will feature an open bar – hosted by St. Claire Green Tea Vodka, silent auction, music, and dancing, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Kenwood Academy.
Chicago native and 14-year NBA veteran Mohammed signed to play back-up center with the NBA's Chicago Bulls on July 28, 2012. He was a member of the 2005 NBA World Champion San Antonio Spurs, and has also played with the Philadelphia 76er’s, Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Bobcats, and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Mohammed developed his talent at Kenwood Academy in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, where he graduated in 1995. He went on to play on the University of Kentucky's 1996 and 1998 championship teams before becoming a first-round draft pick in 1998.
“I’m extremely happy to come home and play for the Bulls. This is a dream come true since I was raised by this city,” said Mohammed.
Kenwood is ranked in the Top 60 High Schools In Illinois and was awarded a Silver Medal by US News for One of the Best High Schools in America. Kenwood’s class of 2012 nearly topped 18 million in awarded scholarship money, and has the highest college enrollment rate of all neighborhood high schools at 84 percent.
Over a two-year period, Kenwood had the most Gates Scholars in the country, and a current Kenwood student earned a seat at The Junior Statesmen Summer School at Princeton University. Their award-winning music department has been awarded eight Superior Ratings. This is the most of all Chicago Public Schools.
“I feel indebted to Kenwood Academy because its high standards, diversity, and amazing faculty prepared me academically for college… I started this fundraiser because I visited Kenwood last year and saw that there were huge needs with the facilities that were not being addressed. I felt that if more people knew, then together, we could make a positive impact by providing Kenwood with the financial support they need to improve the facilities for current students.”
