Diamonds, they say, are a girl’s best friend. However, in author Lema Long’s captivating debut novel DIAMONDS ARE NOT ALWAYS A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND, this hackneyed phrase may not be the case. This worthwhile read is bound to charm readers seeking intrigue, drama, thriller and romance rolled into one.

In this fresh, zesty and engaging debut work of Long, the reader will come across the lives of Brooklyn women who have been through thick and thin. Told through the eyes of Brooklyn native Kennedy Owens, the story begins with her moving to Orlando, Florida, with her six best friends following suit. The seven girls are enjoying their new life down south but are also dealing with a myriad of unpleasant life circumstances. Luckily, they have each other to lean on every step of the way.

Unfortunately, there is an old friend back home in New York who isn’t so much a friend but someone who wishes she were living the girls’ lives instead of her own. Her name’s Diamond Robinson. Despite the fact that she stays behind in Brooklyn, Diamond begins to cause trouble for the seven friends. It’s bad enough that she sets out to win Sky’s husband, Fuji. But when Diamond hatches a plan to teach Portia what it means to live in the real world, she has taken it one step too far.

The charm in reading Long lies in the fact that she has that rare skill to pour in the elements of a good story into one book: engaging plot, endearing characters and a writing style that veers away from the stereotypical. DIAMONDS ARE NOT ALWAYS A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND is a highly absorbing piece that will surely hook readers from beginning to end.
