St. Joseph Health Center is the only health care provider in Trumbull County to offer robot-assisted surgical procedures. The first robotic surgery was completed in April and since then, surgeons at St. Joseph have completed more than 50 robot-assisted hysterectomies. Hysterectomies and other gynecological procedures are the first of many robot-assisted surgical procedures to be offered at St. Joseph.

Robot-assisted surgeries are minimally invasive and more precise than traditional open procedures, resulting in less blood loss, less pain, lower risk of infection, less scarring and quicker recovery for patients. This is because robotic surgery employs tiny surgical instruments that are far more flexible than the instruments used during traditional and laparoscopic procedures – even more flexible than the human wrist. These instruments are inserted into the patient’s body through tiny incisions about half-an-inch long and enable surgeons to perform intricate procedures in extremely tight spaces while they view the surgical field through a visually superior 3-D monitor.

Surgeons using the da Vinci robot at St. Joseph will be available for interviews and to assist reporters in using the robot. Officials from St. Joseph will also be available to discuss development of the robotic surgery program.
