As jcpenney’s premiere charity partner to benefit from the retailer’s new charitable giving program, “jcp cares”, the USO is celebrating a nearly $3 million donation from jcpenney and its customers. Known for lifting the spirits of troops and their families for more than 70 years, the USO will put the money towards its USO locations across the country, including two USO Warrior and Family Centers being built to provide our nation’s wounded, ill and injured with the critical support they need.
“Any time an individual, company or organization offers to join us in our mission to lift the spirits of troops and their families, we are humbled by their generosity. We are grateful for the support that enables us to continue to impact the lives of those who give so much for our country,” said USO CEO and President Sloan Gibson. “This means more phone calls home from USO locations around the world from troops to their loved ones. It means more critical support for our wounded, ill and injured at our new USO Warrior and Family Centers at Ft. Belvoir and Walter Reed. This is the support our troops and families need and deserve from great partners like jcpenney who make it happen.”
The nearly $3 million was raised through “jcp cares,” a charitable giving program jcpenney launched on July 1st to support organizations and causes its customers care about most. The program kicked off with a $1 million donation from jcpenney to the USO. Customers were also able to show their appreciation to troops and families by rounding up their purchases to the nearest dollar at jcpenney stores throughout the month of July and donating the difference to the USO. Additionally, as part of a check-in initiative with foursquare, jcpenney donated $50,000 to the USO. One dollar was donated for each customer that checked in to a jcpenney store from July 23-31.
“The first month of our new ‘jcp cares’ charitable giving program was a tremendous success,” said Miki Woodard, president of jcp cares and vice president of philanthropy at jcpenney. “Caring for the military and their families is a cause that touched the hearts of both our customers and jcpenney team members. Working together, we were able to raise funds that will be used to build new USO centers as well as provide troops serving overseas and their families with a touch of home and ways to stay connected during lengthy deployments.”
Through the USO’s “Operation Enduring Care” campaign, the USO Warrior and Family Centers will offer a peaceful, homelike environment where wounded, ill and injured and their caregivers can continue the recovery process. Built with the needs of wounded warriors in mind, the centers will provide the support needed for our military heroes to heal with honor, strengthen their families and reintegrate into the community.
