A recent study by ranks the top 10 states with the most dangerous highways.

A recent study conducted by ranks South Carolina as the state with the most dangerous highways, with Florida as a distant second. The study includes detailed research points being awarded for six categories.

Following South Carolina in the lowest ranked states is Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, creating a definite trend of southern states being among the most dangerous for highway driving. The states ranked safest include Idaho, Tennessee, Arizona, Kentucky and Wyoming.

The study gathered information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the US Census Bureau, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and ranked in the following categories: Interstate Speeding Fatalities per Mile of Interstate, Percent of Drivers Without Seatbelts, Highway Bridges Rated Obsolete or Deficient, Highway Deaths per 1000 Highway Miles Driven, Federal Funding, and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Death Rates.

Each state was ranked on each criteria, with 1 being the best and 50 being the worst. The rankings were then added up to provide an overall score for each state.

Some of the most surprising findings include:

South Carolina finished a full 37 points ahead of 2nd place Florida in total score.

Even though Idaho the 5th least populated state, more room on the road doesn't necessarily mean more safety.

Mississippi lands right in the middle of the pack for our middle 3 categories, but the high speeding fatalities on their interstates and #49 rank in the IIHS Death Rate averages (2nd only to their Wyoming friends) mean Mississippi is right in the middle of the "best of the worst".

According to Federal Highway Administration estimates, Americans have traveled an average of 234.9 billion vehicle miles per month in 2012.
