After retiring from more than 45 years in the workplace, Webster finally had the time to process the events of her life that led her to where she is today. Spanning from 1927 to the present, “I’ll Never Do that Again” highlights pivotal events in Webster’s life and recounts how she overcame hardship to become the woman she is now.
Married just two days before her 17th birthday, Webster was forced to grow up fast when her family turned against her. She recalls the pain she felt, pain that is still with her after all these years, from one particular relative’s intense dislike and disapproval of her choices.
Webster recalls her father’s reaction when she became engaged in an excerpt from “I’ll never Do that Again”:
“Dad asked Neil, ‘Can you support Laurie the way she is accustomed to living?’ What a question for Dad to ask Neil when he, Dad, kicked me out! Neil said ‘Yes, I can support her.’ Dad signed the papers, then he told me, ‘Don’t ever come back here for milk!’ That was his way of telling me that he wanted nothing more to do with me. Again, I was stunned by his words! He sure knew how to hurt me, his own daughter! Neil and I left Dad’s house. I told Neil, ‘I accept your proposal.’”
“Isn’t the deep dark past interesting?” Webster asks. “Just think how the past can bring everyone up to the here and now.”
