Addiction and substance abuse don’t just impact the individual, but the entire family unit. Everyone has a role in recovery.

Destination Hope, a nationally recognized substance abuse and mental health treatment facility located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is proud to announce the expansion of their family therapy program. Beginning this summer, the treatment center will host monthly intensive family therapy weekend workshops offering families the chance to receive experienced counseling and process unaddressed concerns and emotions related to their loved one’s struggle with substance abuse or addiction.
“Families are an important part of the recovery process for many individuals,” said Ben Brafman, chief executive officer and founder of Destination Hope. “Family therapy can repair the wounds of addiction and substance abuse and we’ve seen tremendous results when relationships are repaired.”
Destination Hope’s family therapy program began in 2007 to assist the families of those struggling with substance abuse and addiction. Initially designed to be a weekly program with individual and group therapy sessions, the family therapy program provides support to the families of current and former Destination Hope patients, as well as an opportunity for families to heal as a family unit.
“While weekly therapy sessions are effective as an on-going treatment, an intensive family weekend workshop helps individuals focus on recovery and repairing relationships with fewer distractions,” said Alton Smith, vice president of operations at Destination Hope.
Destination Hope’s family therapy weekend workshops offer families a variety of educational and therapy tracks and seminars, ranging from group therapy to dual diagnosis disorder, co-dependency and breakout sessions. Alanon and Naranon group meetings are also offered. Each therapy weekend will have a specialized offering of educational seminars and therapy groups.
The first family intensive workshop weekend was held recently and was a success. Limited to small groups, the first family workshop weekend filled to capacity, with additional names on the wait list.
“It was a very emotional weekend for many individuals and families,” said Alton. “But helping them to recognize, handle and move past their negative emotions about substance abuse and addiction and into a more positive mindset makes the emotional difficulties worthwhile.”
“There is clearly a desire from family members to be actively involved in the recovery process, not just at weekly meetings, but in an intensive therapy environment,” said Brafman. “Addiction and substance abuse don’t just impact the individual, but the entire family unit. Everyone has a role in recovery.”
