Families in developed countries place an extraordinary emphasis on academics

Mama Marlaine’s new book “Kissing The Mirror: Raising Humanity in the Twenty-first Century” (published by Balboa Press) is part autobiography and part clarion call for a new, more dynamic, narrative for human development. Written with humility and humor, it explores the author’s journey from working wife/mother to humanitarian/international activist.
In “Kissing the Mirror” Marlaine illuminates “The Mandatory Curriculum” facing every human being and the challenges that inspired her to create a communication tool called The Life Skills Report Card while raising her two daughters. She also describes the birth of an international consciousness movement, Parenting 2.0 (P20), that sprouted when she shared the Life Skills Report Card publicly. P20 recognizes every adult as “raising humanity” and advocates proactive education for non-academic life skills.
An excerpt from “Kissing The Mirror”:
“A poem titled ‘Children learn what they live’ is internationally famous. Its popularity among educators and the families they serve is tragic. Why do people around the world readily support children spending decades learning math, sports, and music from third party credentialed instructors, but accept children’s education in Life Skills as being limited to parents’ behavior? What price do we pay for this impoverished narrative for human development?”
“Families in developed countries place an extraordinary emphasis on academics,” Marlaine writes. “Unfortunately, insufficient appreciation for the development of critical Life Skills cripples both families and the societies they create. Take any societal ill – skyrocketing health care costs, financial collapse, wars – and you will find its roots in an inferior educational process.” “Kissing The Mirror” provides simple solutions for creating substantive change.
In August 2012, P20 is gathering Life Skills educators from four continents for their first “P20 Talks” Conference in San Diego, Calif. The highlight of the conference will be the unveiling of an international volunteer organization called The Global Presence, which aims to effect positive change in every avenue of human interaction by nurturing the expansion of P20 love and consciousness into physical communities around the world.
