Amcor Tobacco Packaging Strengthens Its Global Position

Amcor has recently made investments to improve its value proposition for its tobacco packaging customers both in Europe and the Americas, with state-of-the-art investments in innovation capability as well as geographic expansion.

Earlier this year its Innovation Centre in Rickenbach, Switzerland installed a new generation Bobst Lemanic 820 flat bed press, capable of high speed production of complex packaging products. Gravure printing for small quantities has also become an attractive option for its customers. A new Moog sheet-fed gravure press, with one print unit, enables high quality gravure production of mock-ups and short runs. The next addition to the Innovation Centre will be a unique 19-Unit KBA Offset Press, expected to be delivered later this year. It is the longest offset press in the world, and is specifically developed to produce highly complex packaging products and short print runs.

In addition to equipment upgrades, Amcor Tobacco Packaging is acquiring new production facilities. On 2 July, Amcor completed the acquisition of assets from IPC&L in Argentina, expanding its tobacco packaging production network into South America. Another acquisition of a tobacco packaging plant from Aluprint in Monterrey, Mexico, was completed on 17 July. These acquisitions complement the existing production network in Europe, Asia and North America.

Customers are responding, particularly in North America, where Amcor’s initiatives and service levels have led to tangible results. Amcor has been awarded an exclusive long-term contract with RJR Tobacco for their folding carton needs, securing the business in the United States. In addition, Amcor is now supporting the JTI Canada business. Amcor continues to be a strategic supplier of flip top boxes for PMUSA and recently also became a strategic supplier of cartons to PMUSA.
