Mitt Romney announces his running mate for his presidential campaign on August 11. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Senator, was chosen.

On Saturday, August 11, 2012, Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) as his vice presidential nominee during the first stop of his four-day bus tour. Paul Ryan, forty-two years old, is the chairman of the House Budget Committee. During his speech, Romney made a joke about making mistakes every once in a while before following up with “But I did not make a mistake with this guy,” in reference to Ryan. Media outlets, including, are calling Romney’s choice a bold move. Rob Portman, Chris Christie and Marco Rubio were some of the other individuals who were thought to have a shot as being selected as a running mate.

“As expected, social media mentions of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have skyrocketed, with both #RomneyRyan2012 and Paul Ryan trending on Twitter,” says Justin Maas, vice president of client relations at fishbat, a social media agency. “Romney’s campaign seemed to target the closing days of the Olympics on purpose, and it will be interesting to see if the strategy works out not. Since all of the media’s coverage has been on the Olympics, it’s a relatively empty period for other news coverage.”
