One in five children living in Durham, NC, live with families whose income falls below the poverty line, and many families struggle to stay just above the line. It can be a challenge for these families to provide children with the tools and supplies they need to facilitate learning when they return to school in the fall.

The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin is pleased to announce that once again it has been a sponsor for the “Backpacks for Kids” program, which provides backpacks full of school supplies for needy children in Durham, NC.

The program, facilitated by the Volunteer Center of Durham and the Department of Social Services, provides backpacks loaded with school supplies appropriate for each grade level, including folders, notebooks, paper, books, pencils, markers, highlighters, paints, glue, erasers, scissors, calculators, and much more.

Each backpack costs about $20 per student – a little less for younger students and a little more for older students.

“This is such a worthy program, and it makes a real impact for children throughout our community,” said Patent Attorney Tara Williams. “At the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, we value community and we strive to find ways to support programs that help to improve the lives of local residents in meaningful ways.”

The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin was a “Straight As” sponsor and employees volunteered at the annual back-to-school celebration in which the backpacks were distributed.

In addition to the backpacks for students, the Volunteer Center and the Department of Social Services provided Classroom Care Packages, which provide necessary supplies for teachers to use in the classroom. Many teachers use their own personal funds to buy these supplies, and the program is intended to defray some of those costs.

The sponsorship from the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin also provided support for the Classroom Care Packages.

“By working together, we can make a real difference in the lives of these children and achieve lasting results,” said Nancy Wykle, the director of the DSS volunteer programs.
