Sing Like The King is the world’s first and only training video series for professional Elvis tribute artists, and will be released worldwide on DVD in commemoration of Elvis Presley’s untimely death 35 years ago this week.
The four-part Sing Like The King series provides highly specialized training in a rapidly growing profession. When Elvis died, there were only a few dozen Elvis impersonators; today, the number exceeds 50,000. But while training programs and entire college degrees have been created for many emerging fields, educational resources for Elvis impersonators have been non-existent until now.
The Sing Like The King series runs over six hours, and is packed with vocal exercises and proven techniques to help Elvis impersonators improve and advance their craft, including chapters devoted to:
- mastering the Elvis accent
- proper care of hair and sideburns
- gestures and dance steps
- perfecting the Elvis vibrato
The most groundbreaking feature of the lessons is what instructor Doug Church calls “phonetic translations,” which consists of learning the lyrics of Elvis songs using phonetic spellings of how Elvis actually pronounced or embellished the words.
“You can be a great singer, but not sound anything like Elvis,” explains Church. “The key to the Elvis illusion is mastering the subtleties and nuances of the Elvis accent and the distinctive idiosyncrasies of how he sang.”
The first volume provides a complete overview of Elvis impersonation, while the next three volumes provide in-depth tutorials that utilize Church’s novel pedagogy. The DVD’s include printed lyric charts featuring word-for-word phonetic translations of ten hits from each decade of the King’s career. “Until I can establish Elvis University, this is the next best thing to attaining a college degree in Elvis impersonation,” says Church, a long-time performer, and now a sort of professor of the Elvis tribute.
Sing Like The King will ship worldwide beginning August 16th. The DVD’s can be ordered online at the official website http://www.SingLikeElvis.com.
Doug Church, who wrote and conceived Sing Like The King, is a veteran Elvis tribute artist and the 1991 world champion Elvis impersonator. Church has performed as a full-time professional Elvis tribute artist for over 20 years, including stints with Legends in Concert and several international tours. He earned the moniker “The Voice of Elvis” for his uncanny ability to mimic Presley’s accent and distinctive singing style.
Sing Like The King is produced and distributed by Blue Suede Films, the makers of the classic documentary on the competitive world of Elvis impersonators, "Almost Elvis."
