Who is Training your Employees? The Need for New Skills in the Workplace Brings More Hiring for Corporate Trainers

Recruiters posted more than 23,000 online job ads for Training and Development Managers and Specialists, growing 31% year-over-year, according to WANTED Analytics™.

During July, more than 23,000 job ads were available online for Training and Development Managers or Specialists in the United States, according to WANTED Analytics™ (http://www.wantedanalytics.com), the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. Hiring demand for corporate training professionals has been strong in 2012, growing 31% year-over-year in July after reaching a new all-time high in demand during May. This growth in hiring indicates that as organizations create jobs – particularly technical positions – they are creating onboarding, training, and development programs to retain talent.

Training and Development Specialists are required to have knowledge of particular tools and technologies, especially if they will be training employees in IT and sales roles. Some of these most commonly required skills include:

1. Microsoft Office
2. Microsoft PowerPoint
3. Project management
4. Product development/management
5. Time management
6. Facilities management
7. Open source technology
8. Microsoft Word
9. Needs analysis
10. Sales experience

Training and Development Specialists are most frequently recruited for jobs located in the Washington, DC area. During July, more than 1,300 job ads in the DC-metro region were for trainers, a 21% increase compared to 2011. Other metro areas with high demand for these skills were New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas. While employers in Washington, DC placed the highest number of job ads for this talent pool, one of the highest year-over-year growth areas was actually seen in Dallas where demand grew more than 62% since July of 2011.

As hiring demand continues, the limited talent supply of potential candidates with experience in training and development will create challenges for employers. Each location will, however, experience a varying degree of difficulty when sourcing. According to the Hiring Scale™, Recruiters across the United States spend an average of 6 weeks advertising jobs and sourcing candidates for these positions. Recruiters in Santa Rosa, California are currently experiencing some of the most challenging overall recruiting conditions. Fierce competition has emerged as more employers are looking to fill jobs in this area than the local talent supply can support. In this area, the average posting period is 9 weeks, meaning it is likely to take 3 weeks longer to fill Corporate Training positions.

In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting these skills are Salem (Oregon), Roanoke (Virginia), and Peoria (Illinois). Lower hiring demand in these areas, coupled with larger talent supply, means that Recruiters are likely to fill job openings in as few as 5 weeks.
